Projects

Matt McAuliffe

May 19th 2012,  City of Glass

Stories happen only to those who are able to tell them, someone once said. In the same way, perhaps, experiences present themselves only to those who are able to have them.

Paul Auster The Locked Room(1986)

In the Bindery Projects’ inaugural show Matt McAuliffe presents through sculpture, photography, video and performance an engagement with entertainment, spectacle, identity and interactions in social space.  Popular comedic tropes, everyday encounters with neighborhood, and minimal gestures that change perception of the mundane are used in order to collapse the space between different experiences of object.  The title of the show is taken from the first book of The New York Trilogy by Paul Auster in which the mystery novel is used as a vehicle to explore chance situations.  The flexibility of the narrative leads to questions of the protagonist’s, Quinn, existence and notions of reality.

The live performance Blindfolded Drive (2012) is a spectacle that magicians and others have used as proof of extra sensory perception. Used by the artist, the trip taken is a memorized a route near the gallery marking it as both familiar and at the same time hazardous.
