Confessions on a dance floor

December 7th-December 20th, 2012

Opening Reception Friday, December 7th

7pm – 9pm

There will be a Live Performance Opening Night

At 8pm

Friday, December 7th, 2012

The Bindery Projects is pleased to present Danielle Dean’s Confessions on the dance floor.  This will be the Los Angeles based artist’s first solo exhibition in the twin cities.

The exhibition brings together drawing, video, installation and a live performance, offering viewers an opportunity to view the range of mediums present in Dean’s practice.  Dean’s work explores language and rhetorical devices through various strategies of visual representation and affect.  She investigates in particular how meaning frames objects and people.

The video Baby Girl centers on ideas of displacement. Shot on location in Alief, South West Houston, she is featured along with her father and half-sister in conversation.  Dialogs are constructed using news bites and popular culture references from the U.S, Nigeria and the U.K. The language provided becomes a voice for each member to speak about significant issues yet seems to keep us close to the periphery of the family’s intimacy.

Danielle Dean has shown at Common Wealth and Council, Human Resources, and LA Mart, in Los Angeles, CA, Lasalle College of the arts in Singapore and the Tate Modern and Auto Italia South East based in London, UK, and recently was an artist in residence at the Skowhegan School of Painting 2012
